Factors associated with discontinuation and switching of modern contraceptive methods in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Maternal mortality remains high in Africa and low contraceptive prevalence is one of the main explanatory factors. Thus, several actions have been undertaken to increase contraceptive prevalence, but their effectiveness is influenced by method abandonment or change. This study aims to identify factors associated with contraceptive method abandonment or change at the Wemtenga health and social promotion center in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. We conducted an analytical cross-sectional survey between July and August 2015 among women received for family planning. To identify factors associated with contraceptive method abandonment or change, we performed multivariate logistic regression at the 5% significance level. A total of 391 women were included in the study and their mean age was 32.2 years (95% Confidence Interval "CI95%": [31.4-32.9]). Housewives accounted for 57.1% and 61.1% of them were educated. The proportion of women who had abandoned or changed their contraceptive methods was 23.5%. Side effects (75%) were the main reason given by clients for discontinuing or changing methods. Education (adjusted odds ratio "aOR" = 2.4; 95% CI [1.1-5.2]), religion (aOR = 0.3; 95% CI [0.1-0.8]), and gender (aOR = 0.4; 95% CI [0.1-0.8]) were associated with discontinuing or switching contraceptive methods. The abandonment or change of contraceptive methods is frequent in the Wemtenga health facility. It is therefore essential to reinforce women's knowledge of the side effects of contraceptive methods and how to deal with these side effects during counseling.
